A family outing ended in tragedy after a man drowned while swimming at Air Terjun Belukar Bukit in Kuala Berang on Thursday afternoon.
The victim, identified as 26-year-old Muhammad Zahari Mohd Zain from Kampung Kelulut, Marang, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the victim had visited the recreational area with around 20 family members for a holiday gathering.
However, only five relatives were said to be swimming together with the victim, while the others remained on land along with other visitors at the location.
Police received information regarding the incident through a MERS 999 emergency call from a member of the public at about 4.22pm before security and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
Authorities later contacted the victim’s cousin at around 5pm for updates and were informed that members of the public had managed to locate the victim nearby, although he was already unconscious.
Medical personnel and an ambulance from Kuala Berang Hospital were rushed to the area to provide emergency assistance.
Despite rescue efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at 5.49pm by Kuala Berang Hospital medical officer Dr Rabiatul Adawiyah Din.
The victim’s body was later transported to the Forensic Unit of Kuala Berang Hospital at around 6pm for further action.
