An 11-year-old boy drowned after reportedly slipping while fishing at an irrigation canal in Kampung Masankong, Kudat, on Thursday.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 5.30pm, with the victim’s body later discovered by villagers nearby.
Kudat Fire and Rescue Station chief Darikson Galanang said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at about 5.59pm.
A team of 10 firefighters was immediately deployed to the location, which was approximately 14 kilometres from the Kudat Fire and Rescue Station.
According to initial information, the boy had been fishing with a friend before he allegedly slipped and fell into the canal.
The victim was found by members of the public before rescue personnel arrived at the scene.
Medical officers later confirmed the boy had died.
The body was subsequently handed over to police for further action and investigation.
