Cheers to Love: Couples Who Drink Together May Just Live Longer

Date:

Turns out, couples who sip together might stick together—and even outlive the rest of us. That’s according to a new study from the University of Michigan, where researcher Kira Birditt found that couples who are on the same page when it comes to drinking alcohol tend to live longer.

The study, published in The Gerontologist, explored what’s called the “drinking partnership”—a theory suggesting that couples who share similar drinking habits enjoy smoother marriages, less conflict, and longer relationships. Birditt and her team wanted to take it a step further: could drinking patterns actually affect longevity?

Their findings were surprising. Couples where both partners reported having had a drink in the past three months tended to live longer than couples where neither drank—or where one drank and the other didn’t. “It wasn’t about heavy drinking,” Birditt emphasizes. “We just looked at whether people had a drink at all in the last three months. It seems more about compatibility than quantity.”

So, does this mean you should raise a glass with your spouse every night? Not exactly. The magic might lie in the shared lifestyle and intimacy, not the alcohol itself. Couples who drink together may simply enjoy higher relationship satisfaction, more shared experiences, and better daily connection—all of which can benefit long-term health.

Birditt says there’s plenty more to explore. Are these couples drinking together at dinner? On date nights? Laughing over cocktails on the weekend? Future research hopes to dig into these daily rituals and uncover how shared habits impact both love and longevity.

In the meantime, maybe the lesson is simple: find someone whose lifestyle matches yours, raise a glass (responsibly), and enjoy life together. Cheers!
