Perikatan Nasional (PN) has confirmed its intention to contest all 28 state assembly seats in the upcoming Melaka state election, signalling a full-scale electoral push as political preparations intensify ahead of the expected polls.
The announcement reflects a broader trend in Malaysian politics where coalitions are increasingly adopting a wide-coverage strategy to strengthen their presence on the ground. Analysts often note that such moves are aimed at maximising visibility and bargaining power during and after elections.
PN deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin said seat distribution among component parties will be finalised through internal negotiations to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach. He added that discussions will continue to refine the best formula for securing victories across constituencies.
In a wider political context, coalition negotiations are commonly seen as a crucial step in Malaysian electoral strategy, particularly in closely contested state elections where unity and candidate selection can significantly influence outcomes.
He also stressed that PN is fully prepared for the polls, with election machinery being strengthened at all levels while division chiefs from BERSATU have been instructed to submit suitable candidate names for consideration.
Muhyiddin said candidate selection will be guided by several key criteria, including strong character, integrity, proven performance, experience, and close ties with local communities. He emphasised that leadership qualities and public trust remain central to the vetting process.
“Everyone can offer themselves to contest, but we want individuals with good character, strong work ethic, experience, and those who are close to the people,” he said during the launch of the BERSATU Melaka election machinery in Klebang on Tuesday night.
PN also confirmed it will continue discussions with other parties interested in cooperation ahead of the Melaka polls, with any seat-sharing arrangements to be decided through mutual agreement between the parties involved.
