No Student Will Be Turned Away From University Due To Lack Of Money, Says Minister

Date:

Students who receive offers to study at Malaysia’s public universities will not be prevented from registering simply because they lack financial resources, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

The minister dismissed claims that the government is neglecting students from low-income families, particularly those from the B40 group, who wish to pursue higher education.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Zambry assured parents and students that financial difficulties should never stop them from taking up university offers.

“Everyone can register at university once they receive an offer. No student has ever been barred from registering because they do not have money,” he said.

He urged families not to be influenced by misinformation circulating online and encouraged students to seize the opportunity to further their education.

“Don’t worry, parents. We have also experienced hardship before. This is a chance to change your family’s future. Ignore the noise out there. Just come and register, and we will do our best to help,” he added.

To support students facing financial challenges, the Higher Education Ministry, through the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), provides an Advance Loan Payment (WPP) of RM1,500 to help cover initial registration expenses.

Students are also eligible to apply for PTPTN education financing, which offers flexible repayment arrangements.

Recognising the rising cost of accommodation, the government continues to provide subsidised residential college placements for eligible students at public universities.

Additional support measures include student food assistance programmes and campus-based community kitchens aimed at helping underprivileged students manage their daily living costs.

The minister’s assurance comes amid concerns from some families about the financial burden of pursuing higher education, particularly following the release of university admission results.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also announced the continuation of the MADANI Book Voucher initiative, which provides RM100 book vouchers to secondary school students under the Education Ministry as well as students enrolled in higher education institutions nationwide.

The programme is part of broader efforts to ease educational expenses and support learning among students.

Earlier, results for UPUOnline applications for SPM leavers seeking admission to public universities, polytechnics, community colleges and MARA higher education institutions for the 2026/2027 academic session were released on May 22.

The government has reiterated that financial constraints should not deter students from pursuing higher education, stressing that various forms of assistance remain available to ensure access to university education for all eligible Malaysians.
