The discovery of an abandoned van at an illegal landing site in Simpangan, Pengkalan Kubor, led to the seizure of 1.3 tonnes of Siam rice believed to be smuggled goods.
Brigadier General of the PGA Eastern Brigade, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain, said the van was found during a routine patrol at around 7am today in the area.
He said officers approached the unlocked vehicle, but found no one inside.
A further inspection uncovered 1,300 kilogrammes of Siam rice and glutinous rice, with an estimated value of RM5,350.
The supplies are believed to have been smuggled from Thailand for distribution in the Kota Bharu area.
All seized items have been handed over to the National Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for investigation under Section 20 of the National Paddy and Rice Control Act 1994.
Authorities said patrols and monitoring at border areas will be intensified to curb smuggling activities.
