A cooperative-owned supermarket operator has been given three days to submit a written explanation over allegations of selling rotten meat during a Jualan Rahmah Madani programme held yesterday.
State Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Mohd Mufsi Lat said the supermarket’s coordinating officer has also been instructed to appear in person today to provide an explanation.
He said while the supermarket management is expected to hold an emergency internal meeting, the ministry still requires a formal written report on the incident.
The ministry said it took note of a viral social media post involving a consumer complaint over the quality of meat purchased during the programme in the Kuala Terengganu district.
Authorities stressed that all complaints are being taken seriously to ensure the initiative continues to provide affordable and quality essentials to the public.
The complaint, shared on Facebook, included images of meat and bones and quickly drew more than 300 comments criticising the trader and supermarket operator.
The consumer alleged that the meat was rotten and was handed over from behind the counter during the event.
Under existing regulations, strict action including warnings, blacklisting or termination of participation may be taken against traders who violate programme conditions.
Supermarket operators involved in the programme are required to ensure all goods sold are fresh and safe for consumption.
The ministry also noted that the supermarket management had contacted the affected customer and offered a replacement or refund, subject to proof of purchase.
Internal checks are ongoing, and further action will be taken to prevent a recurrence.
The ministry added that it will continue working with all operators to ensure the smooth implementation of the programme and safeguard consumer interests.
