A motorcyclist was killed while his friend was injured after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) along Jalan Salim in Sibu late last night.
Sibu district police chief ACP Azari Miskon said the 11.15pm incident involved a Lexus RX350 driven by a 25-year-old local man and a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle carrying two 19-year-old men.
He said the victim suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at 12.24am while receiving treatment at Sibu Hospital. The pillion rider is still undergoing treatment.
Preliminary investigations found that the SUV was travelling from the town centre towards Salim when it is believed to have lost control and veered into the opposite lane before colliding with the oncoming motorcycle.
Police also confirmed that the SUV driver tested positive for methamphetamine following a urine screening test.
The suspect has been arrested and will be remanded to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
