APM Records 31 Jellyfish Sting Incidents At Besut Beach

Date:

A total of 31 jellyfish sting cases have been recorded at Bukit Keluang Beach in Besut since May, involving beachgoers aged between three and 44, according to the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Besut.

District Civil Defence Officer Capt (PA) Mohd Fazlien Jaafar said all cases involved visitors who were swimming at the popular beach area.

He said 23 cases were reported in May, while another eight cases were recorded up to last Friday.

According to him, the figures are based on victims who sought initial treatment at the APM watchtower after being stung by the marine creatures.

He did not rule out the possibility that more visitors may have been stung but did not report their cases to authorities.

Victims typically experienced symptoms such as skin redness and pain, particularly on the arms, after being stung by the jellyfish.

APM personnel provided immediate first aid at the site by applying a special solution before advising more serious cases to seek further treatment at hospital.

The presence of jellyfish in the area is believed to have increased during the recent holiday season due to the higher number of visitors to the beach.

Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution when swimming in the sea to avoid further incidents.
