Date:

Eight individuals, including five women, were brought before the Sessions Court in Kota Tinggi on charges related to the use of mule accounts for an online scam syndicate that allegedly caused losses amounting to RM343,830.

Seven of the accused — Wong Mei Fong, Nurul Ainur A. Ramlee, Siti Alifah Hisamuddin, Nor Hasnita Che Hussin, K. Sugumari, Mohd Adib Daud and Jason Lau Wei Jian — pleaded guilty after an alternative charge was read before Judge Hayda Faridzal Abu Hassan.

The court imposed fines ranging from RM250 to RM7,500 on the seven individuals. They would have faced up to three months’ imprisonment if they failed to pay the fines. However, all of them settled the fines imposed by the court.

According to the charges, the offences were committed in Kota Tinggi between April 1 and May 19 this year. They were charged under Section 424 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Meanwhile, another accused, Muhammad Nizar Mohamed, 30, pleaded not guilty to a separate charge involving a RM100,000 incoming transaction through a company account allegedly used without a legitimate purpose.

He is accused of committing the offence in Kota Tinggi on May 19 and was charged under Section 424C(1) of the Penal Code.

The court granted Muhammad Nizar bail of RM2,000 and fixed July 22 for the next mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Afiqah Musa, while all of the accused appeared in court without legal representation.
