Police are tracking down five men suspected of stealing telecommunications cables worth around RM20,000 in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), in an early morning incident that has since gone viral on social media.
Brickfields District Police Chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said the incident occurred at about 4.30am along Jalan Dato Sulaiman, where the suspects were seen allegedly removing Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables from a utility manhole.
According to police, a witness carrying out topography work discovered the group pulling cables using a BMW vehicle before confronting them, causing the suspects to flee the scene.
The men are believed to have escaped in three BMW cars — two white and one black — with CCTV footage later confirming the involvement of all five suspects and the luxury vehicles used.
Telekom Malaysia has since confirmed losses of approximately RM20,000 following the theft, which has prompted an ongoing investigation.
The case is being probed under Section 379 of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Police are urging members of the public with any information to come forward to assist in tracing and identifying those involved in the incident.
