Malaysia and Japan’s complementary strengths in technology and manufacturing can help build a more resilient regional technology ecosystem as global supply chains continue to face increasing pressure, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said both countries have distinct advantages that can be leveraged to strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors, particularly the semiconductor industry.
Anwar noted that Malaysia’s growing expertise in advanced semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging complements Japan’s leadership in materials, equipment and advanced manufacturing technologies.
“Together, we have the opportunity to build a more resilient and integrated technology ecosystem as supply chains face increasing pressures,” he said in his keynote address at the 31st Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia in Tokyo.
He said Malaysia’s long-standing cooperation with Japan has played a key role in the country’s industrial development over several decades.
Anwar added that Japanese companies were instrumental in Penang’s industrial transformation in the 1970s, helping it emerge as one of Asia’s leading electronics and semiconductor hubs.
He stressed that the partnership is built not only on investment, but also on trust, collaboration and long-term commitment.
On the energy transition, Anwar said Malaysia and Japan could work together to support Asia’s shift towards a low-carbon future while maintaining economic growth and energy security.
He also highlighted initiatives such as the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), which demonstrate how sustainability and development can progress together.
Anwar further said both countries should deepen cooperation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence to ensure innovation remains inclusive and people-focused.
