Man Detained After Allegedly Injuring People And Damaging Property In Kota Belud

Date:

Police have detained a man believed to be suffering from a mental disorder after a series of complaints alleging that he had acted aggressively, injured members of the public and damaged property around Kota Belud town.

The suspect was arrested by a team from the Kota Belud District Police Headquarters at approximately 4pm on Thursday following multiple police reports and concerns raised by local residents.

District police chief Superintendent Shahrudin Mat Husain said authorities acted after receiving information that the man’s behaviour was posing a potential threat to public safety and property in the area.

Following his arrest, the man was taken to Kota Belud Hospital before being referred to the Psychiatry Department at Mesra Bukit Padang Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for further evaluation and treatment.

Investigations revealed that he had previously undergone mental health treatment at both medical facilities. Police also discovered that he currently has no family members or guardians responsible for monitoring his condition and wellbeing.

According to Shahrudin, the detention was carried out under Section 11 of the Mental Health Act 2001, which allows authorities to apprehend individuals suspected of having a mental disorder and who may pose a danger to themselves, others or public property.

Earlier, videos and photographs allegedly showing the man behaving aggressively around the town circulated widely on social media, attracting significant public attention.

The individual was also accused of damaging public facilities and business premises, with some reports alleging that he tampered with electricity supply switches, causing concern among residents and traders.

The incident has reignited discussions on the importance of mental health intervention and support systems, particularly for individuals who may not have family members overseeing their treatment and care.
