Death Toll Rises To 47 After Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Philippines

Date:

At least 47 people have been killed, 31 remain missing and 688 others injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines earlier this week.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the devastating quake has affected more than 75,300 households, impacting over 346,000 people across the region.

Authorities said more than 45,000 residents have been displaced from their homes, while over 12,600 houses sustained varying degrees of damage.

The earthquake also triggered at least 45 secondary incidents, the majority of which involved landslides that further complicated rescue and relief efforts.

Infrastructure across the affected areas suffered significant disruption. Officials reported damage to 45 road sections, eight bridges, one airport and two seaports.

The disaster also affected key economic sectors, including agriculture, livestock farming and fisheries, raising concerns over long-term economic losses in the region.

Power supply disruptions were reported in 48 cities and municipalities, leaving thousands of residents without electricity as restoration work continues.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the tectonic earthquake struck at 7.37am local time on Monday at a depth of 33 kilometres.

The epicentre was located approximately 32 kilometres southwest of the coastal town of Maasim in Sarangani province on the island of Mindanao.

Emergency response teams continue searching for those still missing as authorities assess the full extent of the destruction caused by one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Philippines in recent years.
