Azizulhasni Warns Malaysian Cycling Could Suffer If John Beasley Leaves

Date:

National track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang has warned that Malaysian cycling could face a major setback if technical director John Beasley decides to step down from his role.

Azizulhasni described Beasley as a key figure behind Malaysia’s rise into a competitive cycling nation, saying it would be extremely difficult to replace his level of expertise and leadership.

In an Instagram post, the two-time Olympic medallist said Beasley is not only a highly skilled coach but also someone who has played a vital role in athlete development and team culture.

He added that Beasley’s family-like approach has earned deep respect and trust among Malaysian cyclists over the years.

Reports have indicated that Beasley is expected to leave his position at the end of the year despite his contract running until January 31, citing frustration over administrative issues, bureaucracy and limited grassroots development.

Azizulhasni, also known as the “Pocket Rocketman”, said Beasley had shown strong loyalty to Malaysia despite receiving multiple offers from other countries.

He noted that the Australian coach even sacrificed involvement in his family’s long-established cycling business in Melbourne to focus fully on developing Malaysian riders.

Azizulhasni said Beasley’s departure would not only mean the loss of a coach, but also a leader who helped elevate Malaysian cycling onto the world stage.

Beasley has been involved with Malaysian cycling since the mid-2000s and has worked with several prominent riders, including Josiah Ng, Rizal Tisin, Fatehah Mustapa, Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri.
