A Yemeni free climber who gained widespread attention on social media for scaling towering rock faces without ropes or safety equipment has died after falling into a volcano crater during a climb.
Al-Qa’qa’ bin Antar, 30, better known online as the “Spider-Man of Yemen”, reportedly fell on Friday while attempting to descend into the 120-metre-deep Haradhat Damt volcano crater in Yemen’s southern Al Dhale province.
Known for tackling dangerous vertical cliffs and volcanic formations without harnesses, ropes or protective gear, bin Antar had amassed a large following through videos showcasing his fearless climbs.
According to reports, the climber lost his grip while navigating the steep crater wall, plunging into the volcano. Videos circulating online are said to capture the tragic moment of the fall.
Civil Defence teams launched an extensive recovery operation and successfully retrieved his body on Saturday after nearly 24 hours of challenging rescue efforts.
Rescue workers reportedly deployed diving units, water rescue teams, specialised equipment and lighting systems to access the remote and hazardous location.
The operation was complicated by the crater’s steep rocky terrain, difficult access points and dangerous conditions within the volcanic formation.
Bin Antar had become a well-known figure across social media platforms, often leaving his name written in chalk on cliff faces after completing daring ascents that few would attempt.
His death has shocked many followers who admired his extraordinary climbing abilities and willingness to take on extreme challenges without conventional safety measures.
According to previous reports, bin Antar had spoken openly about poverty and said his dangerous climbing exploits were partly motivated by a desire to earn income and improve his circumstances.
