Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has revealed that he held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, focusing on efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, which has continued for more than four years.
In a message shared on Telegram, Zelenskiy said he congratulated Trump on his 80th birthday and thanked the United States for its continued support throughout the conflict. He also expressed hope that Trump’s diplomatic efforts could help bring the war closer to an end.
The conversation took place just days before leaders gather for the G7 summit in France, where the war in Ukraine is expected to be a major topic of discussion. Zelenskiy said the pair exchanged views on the positions of international partners and explored possible steps that could accelerate peace negotiations.
According to the Ukrainian leader, he updated Trump on the latest developments on the battlefield and highlighted what he described as a strengthening of Ukraine’s position. Zelenskiy added that several promising ideas were discussed that could contribute to future peace efforts.
Later in his nightly address, Zelenskiy confirmed that he and Trump had agreed to meet in person during the G7 gathering in Evian-les-Bains. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong American support alongside European allies as Ukraine continues pushing for what he called a fair and lasting peace.
While Washington has been heavily focused on developments in the Middle East, particularly tensions involving Iran, Zelenskiy believes recent battlefield momentum has created a new opportunity for diplomatic progress in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president has also renewed calls for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier this month, he issued an open letter proposing face-to-face negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire. The proposal has received backing from several European leaders, including those from Britain, France and Germany.
However, Moscow has shown little interest in such a meeting. Putin has maintained that Russian forces continue to make gains on the battlefield and has repeated demands for Ukraine to surrender additional territory as part of any peace settlement — conditions Kyiv has firmly rejected.
During his remarks, Zelenskiy also thanked Washington for providing key military support, particularly Javelin anti-tank missiles and Patriot air defence systems. He recently appealed to Trump and members of Congress for additional Patriot batteries, describing them as Ukraine’s most effective protection against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
As world leaders prepare for the G7 summit, attention will be focused on whether renewed diplomatic engagement between Kyiv and Washington can help revive stalled peace efforts and move the conflict closer to a resolution.
