Counterfeit goods drive RM6.03m seizure in KL

Counterfeit goods have continued to be the biggest contributor to seizure values recorded by the Kuala Lumpur Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), reaching RM6.03 million between January and May this year.

KPDN Kuala Lumpur director Mohd Sabri Seman said 31 cases involving violations of the Trademarks Act 2019 were recorded during the period, forming a major share of the total seizure value.

He said a total of 247 cases involving various offences under trade and consumer protection laws were recorded in the first five months of the year, with overall seizures amounting to RM6.74 million.

Of this total, 237 cases were classified as investigation papers involving RM6.52 million in seized goods, while 10 cases were categorised as inquiry papers involving RM220,578.

He added that aside from trademark offences, 11 cases were recorded under the Supply Control Act 1961 involving RM489,094.20 in seizures, while 125 cases were recorded under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

To strengthen enforcement, KPDN Kuala Lumpur inspected 16,543 business premises across the capital over the same period.

He said the retail sector recorded the highest number of inspections at 8,746 premises, followed by ready-to-eat food outlets with 2,708 premises and supply-related businesses with 1,718 premises.

Mohd Sabri said a total of 231 compounds were issued amounting to RM235,300, including 208 on-the-spot compounds worth RM69,300.

He added that the courts imposed total fines of RM219,100 involving 16 completed investigation papers.

On consumer complaints management, he said 5,457 complaints were received between January and May, with 5,042 successfully resolved, representing a 92.4% resolution rate.

Complaints related to misleading services topped the list with 1,358 cases, followed by online transactions with 1,087 cases and pricing issues with 795 cases.

Meanwhile, Mohd Sabri said Ops Jeriji 2026 recorded encouraging performance, achieving 120% of its target after 24 individuals were detained compared to an initial target of 20.
