Lil Nas X Says He’s ‘Doing Much Better’ After Mental Health Struggles And Rehab Stay

Date:

Grammy-winning rapper and singer Lil Nas X has shared a heartfelt update on his recovery journey, revealing that he is feeling significantly better following a mental health crisis that led to his arrest last year.

In an emotional three-minute video posted on social media, the 27-year-old artist said he recently completed several months in rehabilitation before returning home to Atlanta to spend time with his family.

The video marked his first major public statement since August last year, when he was arrested after allegedly attacking police officers in Los Angeles. Authorities had reportedly found him wandering the streets wearing only his underwear. He later pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Earlier this year, a judge approved Hill’s participation in a mental health treatment programme, which could eventually result in the charges being dismissed. The decision came after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, with the court noting that his actions at the time appeared inconsistent with his usual behaviour.

Bipolar disorder is a long-term mental health condition characterised by periods of elevated mood and energy, followed by episodes of depression and emotional lows.

Speaking candidly in the video, Hill admitted he had suspected for several years that something was wrong but had been reluctant to seek help or accept treatment.

“I felt like I knew for years, but I didn’t want to admit it because I didn’t want to take medication or have people look at me differently,” he said.

Known for his humour, the musician joked about already facing enough challenges in life, but said he now feels more at peace after seeking treatment.

“On a serious note, I’m doing much better. I’m feeling better, creating freely and there’s less fear in my heart,” he told fans.

The artist appeared healthy and upbeat in the video, speaking directly to the camera under clear blue skies. He acknowledged feeling nervous about returning to social media after a lengthy absence.

Hill rose to global fame with his record-breaking hit Old Town Road, which spent 19 consecutive weeks at the top of the US charts and earned him two Grammy Awards.

He later cemented his place in pop culture with hits such as Montero (Call Me By Your Name) and Industry Baby, becoming one of the music industry’s most influential and talked-about artists.

In 2023, legendary musician Elton John personally selected Lil Nas X to perform ahead of him on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Although he said he is not quite ready to fully return to the spotlight, Hill reassured fans that new music is on the horizon.

“I’ve been making music for seven years now, and I want you all to know that there is new music on the way,” he said.

He concluded the video by thanking fans for their unwavering support throughout his difficult period.

“We’ve been through so much together. Thank you for standing by me. I love you all, and I just want to continue making you proud while making myself proud too,” he said.
