Federal Government Confident Sarawak Can Manage Bintulu Port Following Status Transfer

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed confidence in Sarawak’s ability to manage and operate Bintulu Port following its transition from a federal port to a state-controlled port.

Speaking at the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 2026 Dinner on Sunday, Anwar said the Federal Government believes Sarawak possesses the expertise, resources and experience required to oversee one of Malaysia’s most strategic ports.

He noted that Bintulu Port plays a crucial role in the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry and remains an important maritime gateway with significant influence across the Asian region.

According to Anwar, Sarawak now has sufficient capabilities, including experienced professionals and industry experts, to successfully administer and develop the port moving forward.

“The transfer of Bintulu Port by the Federal Government reflects our confidence in Sarawak’s ability and serves as a symbol of the strong relationship and cooperation between the Federal and Sarawak governments,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, a ceremony was held in Bintulu to officially hand over a compensation cheque as part of the port’s status conversion from a federal asset to a state-controlled facility.

The event was attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

In May, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced that the Federal Government had agreed to transfer ownership of Bintulu Port to the Sarawak Government with compensation valued at RM1.8 billion.

Meanwhile, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, called on national oil and gas company Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) to work closely together in advancing the country’s energy sector.

He stressed that both parties must respect each other’s rights, responsibilities and legal frameworks at both the federal and state levels in order to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome.

“Abang Johari and I have emphasised to both Petronas and Petros the importance of focusing on common interests and strengthening cooperation. The opportunities before us are enormous, and we want a win-win situation for everyone involved,” he said.

Anwar added that the Federal Government hopes discussions between Petronas and Petros can be concluded fairly, transparently and equitably in the near future, paving the way for stronger collaboration in Malaysia’s oil and gas industry.
