Firefighters in Cape Coral, Florida, successfully rescued what was initially reported as a stranded dog from a canal, only to discover it was a coyote pup.
The Cape Coral Fire Department said Engine 9 and Rescue 9 crews were dispatched on Monday following reports of an animal trapped in a Britannia Lake canal.
A local resident kayaking nearby helped track the animal’s movements and guided firefighters to the dock area where it had disappeared beneath the structure.
Firefighters entered the water and managed to pull the exhausted animal to safety, later confirming it was a young coyote rather than a domestic dog.
Authorities said the animal was extremely fatigued and unable to survive in the wild in its condition, prompting immediate transport for medical care.
The coyote pup was taken to East West Veterinary Care Center before being transferred to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife for further treatment and recovery.
In recognition of their assistance, the kayaker and a neighbour who had earlier attempted to rescue the animal were awarded Community Recognition Coins by the fire department.
