Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that proposals to extend the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, bordering Thailand, are still in the preliminary discussion stage.
“The team involved needs to review the details, costs, and payment methods. Since this is a continuation of the project, the cost may be lower,” he told Malaysian media during a press conference concluding his four-day visit to China.
Anwar added that the matter was discussed separately with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang during bilateral meetings yesterday. “The proposal is aimed in that direction, covering 20 to 25 kilometres towards Rantau Panjang near the Thailand border,” he said.
As Finance Minister, Anwar expressed hope that the extension would help spur development in the area. “The stretch from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, especially Rantau Panjang, is relatively underdeveloped. We hope that having this station will enhance business and development ecosystems,” he said.
Last month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat that further discussions with China and the main contractor, China Communications Construction Co Ltd (CCCC), are needed as the ECRL project is ongoing, and the Rantau Panjang route forms part of the overall project package.
In a related update, Anwar confirmed that Premier Li will represent China at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur at the end of next month.
