Gen Z Staff Told Off At Work For Saying “Okiess” Instead Of “Okay”

Date:

A casual workplace message reply has sparked debate over etiquette and communication styles between different generations.

A Malaysian Gen Z employee recently claimed she was reprimanded by her boss after responding to a work-related WhatsApp message with “okiess” instead of the more formal “okay”.

According to a post reported by mStar, the young woman said her supervisor had contacted her while on leave to request assistance with a task, which she agreed to handle.

She explained that her reply of “okiess” was intended simply to mean confirmation, reflecting a more informal communication style commonly used among younger workers.

However, the response did not sit well with her employer, who later addressed the matter upon returning to the office.

The boss reportedly reminded her to use “okay” in future work communications, stressing that the workplace was not a casual setting among friends.

The employee later expressed frustration over the incident, describing her boss as part of an older “dinosaur” generation, a term often used jokingly to refer to those perceived as less familiar with modern digital slang and communication habits.

The incident has since triggered wider discussion online about the growing gap between traditional workplace expectations and evolving informal communication styles among younger employees.
