Lionel Messi has made history by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches after finding the net for Argentina against Jordan in Dallas on Saturday, surpassing the previous records held by Just Fontaine and Jairzinho.
The substitute curled in a stunning free-kick from 25 metres in the 80th minute, extending Argentina’s lead to 3-1.
Messi’s remarkable scoring streak began during Argentina’s 2-1 win over Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he continued to deliver crucial goals throughout the tournament.
He also scored against the Netherlands and Croatia before netting twice in the final against France, a match that ended with Argentina lifting the trophy.
The run has continued into the 2026 World Cup, where Messi previously scored a hat-trick against Algeria and added another brace against Austria, taking his World Cup goal tally to a record-extending 19.
Fontaine’s previous record of scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches was set in 1958 for France, while Jairzinho matched the feat for Brazil in 1970.
