A grocery shop owner has been fined RM7,000 by the Kuala Berang Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to failing to display a mandatory warning prohibiting the sale of smoking products to individuals under the age of 18.
Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim imposed the fine on Mazni Abdul Ghani after the accused admitted to the offence when the charge was read in court.
According to the charge, Mazni failed to display the required warning sign informing customers that smoking products cannot be sold to anyone below 18 years old at a grocery shop in Kampung Landas.
The offence was committed on August 20, 2025.
Mazni was charged under Section 10(2)(a)(i) of the relevant Act, which provides for a maximum fine of RM20,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction.
The prosecution was handled by Health Prosecuting Officer Alias Awang Kechik.
The case serves as a reminder to business operators that compliance with regulations governing the sale of tobacco and smoking products is mandatory, particularly those aimed at protecting minors from access to such products.
