WhatsApp To Introduce Usernames, Ending Need To Share Phone Numbers

Date:

WhatsApp is set to introduce usernames, allowing users to connect without having to share their phone numbers in a major privacy-focused update announced by the messaging platform.

The Meta-owned service said the new feature will enable users to create unique usernames that can be shared instead of their personal mobile numbers, providing an additional layer of privacy when communicating with others.

According to WhatsApp, the change is designed to prevent phone numbers from being automatically revealed in situations such as joining large group chats or messaging a person or business for the first time.

The company also said users will not be searchable through a public directory, nor will the platform offer username suggestions. Instead, anyone wishing to contact another user must know their exact username.

With more than three billion users worldwide, Meta acknowledged that not everyone will be able to secure their preferred username because of the platform’s vast user base.

The rollout of username reservations will take place gradually over the coming months, with WhatsApp notifying users in each country once the feature becomes available.

Meta also announced that creators, small businesses and organisations will be able to reserve WhatsApp usernames that match those they already use on Facebook or Instagram, helping them maintain a consistent online identity across the company’s platforms.
