Three people were injured, two of them critically, after an explosion struck a residential building in Monaco on Monday evening in what authorities believe was a deliberate attack.
According to French media reports, the blast occurred at around 9pm local time on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, close to Monaco’s border with France.
Officials believe the explosion was triggered after a bag was left outside the residential building before detonating.
Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, told AFP that investigators believe the incident was “very likely an attack” and confirmed that police have launched an investigation.
He said preliminary findings indicate the explosive device contained bolts and metal pellets, suggesting it was designed to maximise the impact of the blast.
Mirmand described the incident as unprecedented, saying it was the first attack of its kind in the history of the principality, to the best of his knowledge.
Police officers and emergency responders quickly secured the area following the explosion as investigators began examining the scene to determine who was responsible and establish a motive.
Authorities have not announced any arrests, and investigations remain ongoing.
