A 58-year-old woman was killed after a motorcycle crashed into her and four family members while they were walking along Jalan Kuala Ketil–Sungai Petani near Bandar Puteri Jaya early Tuesday morning.
The victim, identified as Shukriyah Abu Bakar, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries in the incident, which occurred at about 6am.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said preliminary investigations found that the motorcyclist was travelling along the left shoulder of the road when he allegedly failed to notice the group of pedestrians.
The group was reportedly walking along the same stretch of road and included the victim, several family members, a baby and a child.
“Due to the close distance, the motorcyclist was unable to avoid the pedestrians and collided with them,” Hanyan said in a statement.
The impact left Shukriyah with fatal injuries, while the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries.
Another pedestrian also suffered injuries to the arm and received medical treatment.
Police are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, including how the group of pedestrians came to be walking along the road at that time.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
