Court Orders Psychiatric Evaluation for Teacher Accused of Attempted Murder

Date:

A 30-year-old teacher has been charged in the Sessions Court here today with attempting to murder his wife last month.

Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin Muhamad Zubairi did not enter a plea after the charge was read before Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin, as he reportedly did not understand the allegation. He remained silent throughout the proceedings, with his head bowed, and his left wrist appeared to be bandaged.

According to the charge, he is accused of attempting to kill his 28-year-old wife, Hanis Sofea Hamdan, using a knife, knowing that his actions could result in her death. The alleged offense took place in a room at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, at 5:45 a.m. on 27 August.

He faces a charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted. The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Lushani, while the accused was represented by lawyers Muhaimin Hashim, Yazid Khairul Azman, and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan.

The prosecution requested that Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak for a mental health evaluation. They cited a memo from a doctor at Penang Hospital recommending further assessment. The defence did not object to the request, noting that previous attempts to communicate with their client were unsuccessful due to his lack of understanding.

Judge Ahzal ordered the accused to undergo evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code and set 8 October for the submission of the report.

The teacher was remanded for six days last Saturday to allow police investigations, and the remand order expired today.

Earlier reports indicated that financial stress from bank loans and “buy now, pay later” instalments may have sparked arguments that led to the attack. During the incident, the suspect allegedly attacked his wife with a kitchen knife before injuring himself with the same weapon. Authorities and family members described the couple as previously “harmonious.”
