Man Mauled by Wild Elephant at Kelantan Plantation

Date:

A man, who works at a plantation, was seriously injured after being attacked by a wild elephant near Metro Blau Plantation in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, Director-General of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN), said initial reports indicate the victim is a 54-year-old Nepalese national. The incident occurred at around 7:30 pm yesterday when the elephant suddenly intruded into the plantation and attacked the man.

“The victim sustained severe injuries to his left leg, chest, and neck and was immediately rushed to the Emergency Ward at Gua Musang Hospital for treatment,” he said.

PERHILITAN staff in Gua Musang are investigating the incident and collecting information at the site. According to records, the plantation had not previously reported any disturbances caused by wild elephants this year.

Similar incidents have occurred in Malaysia, including on July 28, when a 64-year-old man in Kampung Wak Salam, Mersing, Johor, was injured by a wild elephant while heading to a morning prayer, and on March 21, when a rubber tapper and PERHILITAN staff were injured in two separate wild elephant attacks in Kampung Laloh, Kuala Krai, Kelantan.
