A woman with a mental disability is feared to have drowned after allegedly falling from a bridge along Jalan Jabor–Paka near Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah (AMBS) in Dungun on Friday.
The incident, which occurred at about 10.30am, involved 47-year-old Nor Haslini Din, who is believed to have been swept away by the river current after falling from the bridge located about 100 metres from her home.
Dungun district police chief Superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the victim’s 77-year-old father, Din Zakaria, witnessed the incident and attempted to rescue his daughter but was unable to reach her before she was carried away by the strong current.
Authorities immediately launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation after receiving an emergency call regarding the incident.
A total of 27 personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and other rescue agencies have been deployed to search for the missing woman.
Search efforts have been focused along a two-kilometre stretch of the river from the point where she was last seen. However, as of late Friday, the victim had yet to be found, and the operation remains ongoing.
