The public is reminded to exercise greater caution while engaging in recreational activities during the school holiday season, especially in rivers, rapids, and beaches that are at risk of flash floods and drowning.
Farhan Sufyan Borhan, Director of the Kelantan branch of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), said that areas such as Jeli, Kuala Krai, and Bachok have been identified as high-risk locations.
“We are not discouraging the public from enjoying recreational activities, but preparedness and awareness of the surroundings must be prioritized. Even though it is the Southwest Monsoon season, rainfall frequency remains high,” he said during a press conference on Monday.
Prior to this, he officiated the 5th Annual Assembly of 2025 at JBPM Kelantan Tunjung.
He added that such conditions could lead to drowning and other unfortunate incidents. In Kelantan, over the past five years, 109 people have lost their lives due to drowning, a figure he described as very concerning.
“However, we will continue to raise awareness among the public from time to time to ensure such incidents do not recur,” he said.
