The High Court in Gujarat, western India, has upheld the death sentences of 38 people convicted over the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bombings that killed more than 50 people and injured nearly 200 others.
In Tuesday’s ruling, the court also upheld life imprisonment for another 11 individuals linked to the deadly attacks, according to Xinhua.
The coordinated bombings took place on 26 July 2008, when 21 explosive devices detonated across 20 locations in the city of Ahmedabad within just 70 minutes, triggering widespread panic and devastation.
Following the attacks, Indian police identified more than 100 suspects during their investigation. However, after years of legal proceedings, a special court convicted 49 individuals while the remaining accused were acquitted.
The Ahmedabad bombings remain one of India’s deadliest coordinated terror attacks, with Tuesday’s High Court decision reaffirming the sentences handed down against those found guilty.
