A 49-year-old woman was killed after becoming trapped inside her car when it caught fire on a flyover along the Sibu-Bintulu Road in Selangau on Monday evening.
The victim, identified as Simbut Sigai, was found trapped in the driver’s seat after firefighters extinguished the blaze.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the emergency call was received at 7.22pm, prompting eight firefighters from the Selangau Fire and Rescue Station to be deployed to the scene with a fire engine.
The team arrived just two minutes later at 7.24pm, with the incident occurring about two kilometres from the fire station.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the vehicle engulfed in flames, with the fire concentrated around the engine compartment and the front section of the car. Initial information indicated that the driver was still trapped inside the burning vehicle.
Firefighters immediately brought the blaze under control before launching a rescue operation. Special Road Traffic Accident (RTA) rescue equipment was used to extricate the victim, who remained pinned inside the driver’s seat.
Sadly, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further investigation.
The fire was successfully brought under control at 8pm, while the operation concluded at 8.53pm after firefighters completed overhaul and safety checks at the scene. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
