DBKL Launches AI Traffic Control Centre To Ease Congestion In Kuala Lumpur

Date:

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has established an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Control Centre to help reduce traffic congestion across the capital, including optimising traffic light timings using real-time data.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Lo Su Fui said the initiative forms part of the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 and the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040, which aim to modernise the city’s transport management system.

“We have already implemented AI-powered traffic lights that use AI calculations to determine travel patterns and adjust signal timings accordingly. It is no longer based on fixed red and green light intervals as in the past,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time on Monday.

Lo was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat), who asked whether the government plans to ensure covered pedestrian walkways are connected to flats, apartments, Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs) and the Sentul Timur Light Rail Transit (LRT) station.

Addressing an earlier question from P. Prabakaran (PH-Batu) on measures to ease congestion along the main road from Sentul Police Station to Sentul Market, Lo said DBKL has prepared a comprehensive traffic dispersal plan that will be implemented in phases and incorporated into development approval requirements for future projects in the area.

Among the proposed improvements is the widening of Jalan Sentul from two lanes to three near Sentul Market to increase road capacity and improve traffic flow.

DBKL will also create additional parking bays in front of Lot 202 to curb illegal roadside parking, which has been identified as one of the main causes of congestion around the market area.

Lo added that DBKL will intensify enforcement against motorists who park illegally along road shoulders, particularly near public facilities such as Sentul Market and schools, where traffic congestion is most severe during peak hours.

The AI-powered traffic management system is expected to play a key role in improving traffic efficiency as Kuala Lumpur continues to pursue smarter and more technology-driven urban mobility solutions.
