Zahid Warns Against Trusting PAS Too Easily, Says Party Can ‘Move The Goalposts’ Anytime

Date:

UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has cautioned against placing too much confidence in statements made by PAS, claiming the party has a history of changing its position without warning.

The Deputy Prime Minister said there is currently no formal agreement between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS, stressing that any discussions held were merely informal understandings and not a priority for BN.

“What has been said should not be accepted as entirely accurate because we do not have any agreement with PAS. Even if there have been discussions, they are only at the level of mutual understanding and are not our priority,” he told reporters after a luncheon with the TVET@KKDW contingent heading to the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition on Monday.

Ahmad Zahid said BN’s experience during the Johor state election showed that PAS leaders’ public statements did not match what eventually happened during the nomination process and on polling day.

“So don’t be overly optimistic about them. We should remain positive, but not too positive. They can move the goalposts at any time. I see those remarks as political statements,” he said.

Responding to claims that seat negotiations were taking place between BN and PAS ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election, Ahmad Zahid reiterated that PAS should not be relied upon, citing what he described as the party’s track record of frequently changing its stance.

“That’s why I say we shouldn’t hold too tightly to what they say because they can change. Many parties have experienced this before. I just hope they don’t change again,” he added.

Earlier, PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang hinted that discussions on political cooperation and seat negotiations between PAS and BN were underway ahead of the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election.
