Woman Sparks Bomb Scare After Bringing Suspected Mortar Shells To Police Station

Date:

A woman in Penang unintentionally sparked a bomb scare after walking into a police station carrying two objects resembling explosive devices, which she had discovered while clearing out her late father’s belongings.

According to North Seberang Perai District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman, the local woman found the suspicious objects inside a storage room at her family home, where her father had lived before passing away in December last year.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, had been sorting through old items in the storeroom when she came across the objects. She later brought both items to the Butterworth Police Station for further action.

Police investigations found that the storage room had been used to keep the late father’s old belongings for more than 20 years. The house has remained vacant since his death, and family members were unaware the objects were stored there.

Following the report, officers from the Bomb Disposal Unit (UPB) of the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters were deployed to examine the items.

The unit later confirmed that both objects were military training mortar bombs that contained no explosive materials and posed no danger to the public.

The objects were subsequently taken into police custody for further examination before the case was officially classified as No Further Action (NFA).

Police have urged the public not to sensationalise incidents involving suspected explosives, warning that speculation could cause unnecessary public alarm and interfere with investigations.

Anyone with information related to the case has been asked to contact Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Harysman Osman via the North Seberang Perai District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.
