Do Bluetooth Earbuds Cause Thyroid Nodules? Here’s What The Science Really Says

Many people wear Bluetooth earbuds for hours every day—while walking, studying, working or even sleeping. But could long-term use increase the risk of thyroid nodules or even thyroid cancer? A recent study has sparked concern, but experts say the findings have been widely misunderstood.

The discussion stems from a study published in Scientific Reports in June 2024, which examined whether there is a link between Bluetooth earbud use and thyroid nodules. Researchers surveyed more than 600 participants about their daily earbud habits, the type of earbuds they used and whether they had been diagnosed with thyroid nodules. Using machine learning to analyse the data, the study found that age and daily Bluetooth earbud usage time were the two factors most strongly associated with the presence of thyroid nodules.

However, the researchers stressed that the study identified an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship. The paper did not conclude that Bluetooth earbuds cause thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer.

One possible explanation suggested by the researchers is that Bluetooth earbuds emit low-level non-ionising radiofrequency radiation, the same type produced by mobile phones and other wireless devices. They proposed that prolonged exposure over many years could potentially influence biological processes, such as oxidative stress or hormone regulation, which might indirectly affect thyroid health. This remains a hypothesis rather than a proven mechanism.

The study also noted that in-ear Bluetooth earbuds appeared to show a stronger association with thyroid nodules than over-ear models, likely because they are worn closer to the thyroid gland. Even so, the findings only describe a statistical relationship and cannot prove that earbuds directly contribute to the development of thyroid disease.

Medical experts point out that thyroid nodules are extremely common, with an estimated 20 to 40 per cent of adults developing them, and many causing no symptoms or health problems. Most thyroid nodules are benign and are often detected during routine health screenings.

Doctors emphasise that Bluetooth earbuds are not recognised as a major cause of thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer. The most significant risk factors remain genetics, hormonal and endocrine disorders, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, iodine imbalance, obesity and metabolic disease. For thyroid cancer, the clearest established risk factor is exposure to ionising radiation, particularly to the head and neck during childhood.

Experts recommend using Bluetooth earbuds sensibly rather than avoiding them altogether. Limiting continuous use, taking regular breaks, alternating with speakers or wired earphones when practical, and avoiding placing wireless transmitting devices close to the neck for prolonged periods may help minimise unnecessary exposure.

People should also seek medical advice if they notice a lump at the front of the neck, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or other symptoms suggestive of thyroid disease. Those with a family history of thyroid disorders or older adults are encouraged to undergo regular thyroid screening as advised by their healthcare provider.

The overall message from current scientific evidence is reassuring: using Bluetooth earbuds responsibly has not been shown to damage the thyroid or cause cancer. Experts say maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, getting adequate sleep and attending regular health check-ups remain far more important for protecting thyroid health than worrying about everyday Bluetooth earbud use.
