A 57-year-old man is feared to have been attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Estet Global, Sukau last night.
The victim, identified as Nasran Matzen, was believed to have gone to a river near the plantation area with two friends to catch fish before he suddenly disappeared from their sight.
Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Suriyadi Darwis said the victim’s friends immediately searched the area where he was last seen after noticing he was missing.
However, they only found pieces of body tissue and the victim’s trousers at the location, raising suspicions that he may have been attacked by a crocodile.
Suriyadi said the fire department received a report from the police at about 10.23am today before deploying four firefighters to the scene.
“The search and rescue operation was carried out with the cooperation of other security agencies and villagers using surface water search methods.
“The search covered an area within a one-kilometre radius, but the victim has yet to be found,” he said when contacted.
The operation was temporarily suspended at 2.50pm following discussions with the police and will resume tomorrow.
The incident occurred just a day after another crocodile attack involving a 57-year-old man, Rusli Mardin, who was found with bite marks on his stomach and neck in Kampung Batu Putih.
Rusli was reported missing on Friday after he was believed to have been attacked by a crocodile while washing his boat at Sungai Kinabatangan.
