13-Year-Old Boy Killed After Fountain Collapses During Spain’s World Cup Celebrations

Date:

Spain’s World Cup victory celebrations turned tragic after a 13-year-old boy was killed when a fountain collapsed under the weight of celebrating fans in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca Province.

According to foreign media reports, large crowds had gathered at the Arbol Gordo Fountain to celebrate Spain’s triumph, with many supporters waving Spanish flags and climbing onto the fountain.

Photos circulating online showed the fountain packed with people, while around six or seven men had climbed onto the central pedestal.

At the height of the celebrations, the structure suddenly gave way, sending the pedestal crashing onto the crowd below.

Emergency services said they received a distress call at 12.33am and immediately dispatched multiple rescue units to the scene.

The 13-year-old boy was rushed to a nearby medical centre with serious injuries but later died despite efforts to save him.

Three other people were also reported to have suffered serious injuries in the incident.

Authorities have cordoned off the area while investigations into the collapse are underway.
