A premises in Sabah was raided after authorities uncovered suspected illegal bitcoin mining activities involving unauthorised electricity usage.
The joint operation involving the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), Sabah Electricity (SE) and police led to the seizure of nine bitcoin mining machines, along with cables, switchboards and other equipment believed to have been used to illegally tap into Sabah Electricity’s power supply.
ECoS said the seized items were estimated to be worth around RM100,000.
Sabah Electricity also estimated that the illegal electricity connection had caused unbilled electricity losses of approximately RM15,000 every month.
“The case is being investigated under Sections 61(3) and 61(8) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024,” ECoS said in a statement.
Under Section 61(3), individuals found guilty may face a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM1 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
Meanwhile, Section 61(8) provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction.
Authorities continue to monitor electricity-related offences and stressed that illegal connections pose risks to the reliability and safety of the power supply system.
