Woman Claims She Found Glass In Premium Gelato, Calls For Better Food Safety Measures

Date:

A Thai woman is urging a well-known gelato shop in Bangkok to improve its food safety standards after she allegedly discovered pieces of glass in a dessert she purchased, leaving her with injuries inside her mouth.

The incident was shared by Facebook user Palmmy Thaniya, who posted her experience in the “We Are Consumers” Facebook group to warn others and seek a more thorough response from the business.

According to Thaniya, she first bought a serving of gelato from the shop last month and enjoyed it so much that she returned shortly before the shopping mall closed at around 10pm to buy another serving. This time, she chose a flavour containing ground nuts.

While eating the dessert as she queued at a nearby doughnut shop, Thaniya noticed that some of the “nuts” felt unusually hard when she bit into them.

After mentioning it to a friend, she was shocked to learn she was bleeding from her mouth.

She immediately spat out the gelato and discovered what she believed were several small pieces of glass mixed into the dessert. She claimed the fragments were similar in size to the ground nuts, making them difficult to distinguish while eating.

Thaniya returned to the gelato shop straight away to report the incident. According to her, staff collected the remaining gelato for investigation, refunded her purchase and agreed to cover her medical expenses.

She later sought treatment at a hospital, where doctors found minor cuts on her tongue and the inside of her cheek. Fortunately, there were no injuries to her throat, although doctors recommended that she receive a tetanus vaccination as a precaution.

After the visit, Thaniya sent the shop her medical certificate and treatment receipts via the LINE messaging app, and the business reimbursed her medical expenses as promised.

However, she said she was disappointed that she never received a formal explanation from the owner or the chef about how the contamination happened or what measures would be introduced to prevent a similar incident in the future.

Instead, she claimed all communication was handled through a staff member via messaging applications.

Thaniya stressed that she is not seeking additional compensation or calling for a boycott of the business. Rather, she hopes the company will strengthen its food preparation procedures, quality control and customer complaint handling.

Following her viral post, many social media users speculated that the shop involved was Parameter, a Bangkok gelato brand launched earlier this year by former Thai actor and television host Kris Srepoomseth.

Kris has previously promoted the brand as offering premium gelato made with high-quality ingredients. However, at the time of writing, neither Kris nor the business had publicly responded to the allegations.
