35-Year-Old Man Jailed After Threatening Mother Who Refused Giving Him RM20

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court today after threatening to kill his mother when she refused to give him RM20.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali handed down the sentence after Joseph Sumbang pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

The incident occurred around 11.15am on September 6 at a house in the Sungai Apong Resettlement Scheme.

According to case details, Joseph flew into a rage and acted aggressively during an argument with his mother. Under the influence, he struck a cupboard and the house door before threatening to kill her when she refused to give him RM20, fearing he would use the money to buy drugs.

His mother, terrified for her safety, immediately fled the house with her other child and lodged a police report. Joseph was arrested later the same day at 6.49pm.

Investigations confirmed that Joseph had gone on a rampage and issued death threats against his mother, which were also heard by his sibling.

Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng led the case, while Joseph was unrepresented.
