Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said any follow-up action arising from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji must proceed strictly according to the law and without interference from any party.
Anwar said the Cabinet is expected to discuss the RCI report during its meeting on Wednesday before deciding whether it will be released to the public.
He stressed that anyone who has not committed an offence has the right to defend themselves, while those found guilty should be prosecuted and punished through the proper legal process.
“Hopefully, the Cabinet will make a decision on Wednesday. There is a report, and let the people read it. If someone is innocent, they should defend themselves. If they are guilty, they should be charged. If convicted, they should go to prison. That is not my decision,” he said while speaking at the Semarak Kenegaraan programme at Dewan Garison Gemas, Kem Syed Sirajuddin.
Anwar emphasised that every institution has its own constitutional role and that the Prime Minister cannot interfere in investigations, prosecutions or court decisions.
“Our system is clear. Investigations are conducted by the investigating authorities, prosecutions are handled by the Attorney General, and judgments are made by the courts. Those are not matters for the Prime Minister. My responsibility is to ensure the process remains independent and follows the Constitution and the law,” he said.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of integrity, warning that those entrusted with public responsibilities must not betray the trust placed in them.
“The real problem is when those entrusted with responsibility betray that trust. A country cannot preserve its peace and stability if those given public trust choose to abuse it,” he added.
