The Royal Malaysia Police have opened a disciplinary investigation against 12 police officers and personnel accused of extorting RM2 million from a Vanuatu national.
Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Aida Abdul Hamid said the disciplinary probe is being conducted alongside an ongoing criminal investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
She said the JIPS investigation will focus on integrity issues to determine whether the officers breached the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993, based on the findings of the CID investigation.
“JIPS will also examine any weaknesses in supervision, as well as the possibility of abuse of power, ethical violations or misconduct that could tarnish the image of the police force,” she said when contacted on Tuesday.
Aida added that a decision on whether the officers should be suspended from duty will depend on the progress and findings of both the CID and JIPS investigations, in accordance with existing regulations.
On Monday, Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed that 12 police personnel of various ranks had been arrested over allegations that they extorted RM2 million from a Vanuatu national.
The case remains under investigation.
