Worshippers at a mosque in Kuala Besut, Terengganu, were shocked after discovering a newborn baby girl abandoned outside the premises early on Monday morning.
The infant, who still had her umbilical cord attached, was found at about 5.30am by a congregant who had arrived to perform the dawn (Subuh) prayer.
Besut district police chief Superintendent Mohd Rozaime Ab Rahim said preliminary investigations found that the baby had been placed inside a cloth bag before being left in the mosque compound.
Initial examinations indicate that the baby girl was less than 24 hours old when she was abandoned.
She was immediately rushed to the Emergency Department of Besut Hospital, where she is reported to be in good health.
Police are investigating the case under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which relates to the abandonment of a child.
Mohd Rozaime urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist the investigation.
