The announcement of volunteer recruitment for the 2026 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix has sparked debate on social media after the daily allowance was revealed to be RM60.
The recruitment drive, organised by Sepang International Circuit (SIC), drew mixed reactions, with many netizens questioning whether the allowance was reasonable for an event of such international scale.
Some users argued that volunteers would likely be required to work long hours, manage large crowds and handle demanding responsibilities throughout the race weekend.
“If you’re working all day at a major international event, RM60 doesn’t seem worth it. The venue is huge, it’s hot, and you’ll probably be on your feet for more than eight hours,” one user commented.
However, others defended the allowance, saying volunteering is about gaining experience rather than earning money.
“The experience itself could be far more valuable. Not everyone gets the chance to work behind the scenes at a Formula 1 event,” another social media user wrote.
Others suggested that those unhappy with the allowance simply should not apply, noting that many people are willing to volunteer for the unique opportunity despite the modest payment.
SIC previously announced that applications for volunteers are open through its official website, with successful applicants receiving a RM60 daily allowance and meals during their assigned shifts.
The 2026 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled to take place from Oct 2 to Oct 4, 2026.
Working hours will depend on each volunteer’s assigned role and the organiser’s operational requirements.
Applicants are required to provide their personal details, residential address and any previous volunteer experience with SIC, if applicable.
