The Bachok division Youth chief of Parti Amanah Negara (AMANAH) was charged in the Sessions Court on Monday over an alleged false social media post concerning fuel price increases.
The accused, Abdullah Aqili Romeli, 35, a mechanic, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Sessions Court Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.
According to the charge, Abdullah Aqili allegedly knowingly created and initiated the transmission of a communication containing false information through the Threads application with the intent to annoy or disturb others.
The post was allegedly viewed at 3pm on March 31, 2026, at Level 8, MCMC Tower 1, Jalan IMPACT, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya.
He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(2) of the same Act.
If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both. The court may also impose an additional fine of up to RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.
The prosecution, led by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) prosecuting officer Nur Nazhzilah Mohammad Hashim, proposed bail of RM10,000 with one local surety, along with any additional conditions deemed appropriate by the court.
Abdullah Aqili, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail amount, telling the court that he had no fixed income and was supporting an adopted child.
The unmarried accused also said he had travelled from Kelantan with only RM300.
After hearing submissions from both parties, Judge Ahmad Fuad allowed bail of RM7,000 and fixed Aug 26 for the next case mention.
