Izzat Shameer Makes History With Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls Silver

Date:

National lawn bowls player Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win a medal in the men’s singles event at the Commonwealth Games after claiming silver at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.

Competing in the gold medal match at the Scottish Event Campus, Izzat was defeated 2-0 by England’s Sam Tolchard. Despite the loss, his run to the final marked Malaysia’s best-ever result in the men’s singles event.

The achievement surpassed the country’s previous best finish in the discipline, set by Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin, who placed fourth at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Fairul now serves as the head coach of the national lawn bowls squad.

Earlier, Malaysia also secured a silver medal in the women’s pairs event through the partnership of Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman.

The Malaysian duo finished runners-up after losing to England’s Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor in the final.

The national lawn bowls team has now collected two silver medals at the Glasgow Games.

Malaysia’s campaign will continue with world No. 1 Emma Firyana Saroji, who begins her challenge in the women’s singles event later today.
