Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said all Malaysians are part of one family regardless of race, declaring that he is prepared to lose political support for standing by that belief.
Speaking at Pakatan Harapan’s Grand Finale Kekal Harapan rally in Sikamat, Negeri Sembilan, on Tuesday night, Anwar criticised politicians who tell Malaysian Chinese to “go back” to the countries their ancestors came from.
He pointed out that many Malaysian Chinese were born in the country and have always regarded Malaysia as their home.
Anwar urged the public to consider how such remarks would affect those targeted, saying they were hurtful and divisive.
He added that he would also oppose anyone who insulted Malays or told them to “return to Sumatra”, stressing that such comments against any community were equally disrespectful.
Anwar said his position was also consistent with Islamic teachings, which emphasise respecting the dignity of every individual regardless of background.
“Whether they are Chinese, Indian, Malay or Orang Asli, they are part of my family,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that his remarks were not made for political gain, adding that he was willing to lose votes rather than abandon his belief in unity and mutual respect.
He also urged politicians not to exploit racial issues for electoral advantage, saying leaders should not criticise Malays to win Chinese votes or attack the Chinese community to gain Malay support.
Anwar said Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity and called on all parties to reject politics that divide communities along racial lines.
